White House Drops Plan to Ban Chinese AI Technology

The White House wanted to sanction Chinese companies developing open-source AI models (especially Moonshot AI/Kimi K3 & DeepSeek). This included blacklisting these companies and barring US cloud service providers from collaborating with them. But due to intense lobbying by large tech companies (Nvidia, Microsoft, Google, Meta), the White House had to back down. Notably, even Jensen Huang posted his first ever X post advocating for open models!

It’s interesting that while OpenAI/Anthropic were in favor of the sanctions, many infrastructure companies were against it. It seems that the US government will take a more competitive approach rather than outright banning Chinese AI models. Therefore, we can expect Chinese open models to continue operating on US infrastructure.
