How AI Is Breaking Open Source
GitHub is flooded with automated pull requests from bots. The social contract that has kept open source going for 35 years has been destroyed, says Chester Wisniewski, Principal Researcher at Sophos.
I'm using Claude Code every day, and incorporating lots of open source code into my projects. However, if open source authors begin to close off their repositories due to spam or license violations (e.g., GPL/Creative Commons), then the training dataset for the next generation of these models will be much smaller. In fact, it already has been, but slowly.
