Fal Doubles Valuation To $16 Billion On Inference Demand

Fal, a startup that runs AI models for other companies, raised $1.3 billion and doubled its valuation to $16 billion as demand for open-model inference surged.

Fal hosts and runs already-trained AI models for other companies. This is called inference. The startup has raised $1.3 billion in a new funding round. The round was led by venture firm Bessemer Venture Partners. Chipmaker Nvidia, Sound Ventures, and investment firm T. Rowe Price also put in money. The deal values Fal at $16 billion. That is twice the $8 billion valuation it had in April. Counting an earlier round led by venture firm Sequoia, Fal has raised $1.65 billion in total. Its annual revenue has already passed $800 million.

Demand for running AI models is now growing faster than demand for the models themselves. That is why the valuation doubled in just six months. But margins at these platforms stay thin. This includes competitors like Baseten, Fireworks AI, and Modal. The reason is simple. Buying or renting the compute they run on is still expensive.
