Your tmux windows and AI agent chats survive any reboot
A plugin for tmux — the tool that runs several terminal panes in one window — saves your windows, panes and AI agent conversation every minute and right before shutdown, then restores everything exactly as it was.
An add-on for tmux that backs up your terminal session and brings it all back — including an open AI assistant conversation — after a restart.
When it helps
Useful if you keep an AI coding agent open in a terminal for hours or days and don't want to lose context to a reboot or power loss. Skip it if you don't use tmux, or your assistant isn't one of the supported ones (Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, opencode, pi).
Pros
- Backs up windows, panes and scrollback automatically every minute.
- Your AI agent conversation resumes right where it left off.
- Risky commands wait for your Enter instead of auto-running.
- One command installs and turns on everything it needs.
Cons
- Only works with tmux on Linux and macOS, not Windows directly.
- Supports just five ready-made AI assistants; others need a custom adapter.
- Needs a background service (systemd or launchd) with extra permissions.
How to set it up — step by step
- 1Open a terminal on Linux or macOS where tmux is or will be installed.
- 2Run curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/andrewboldi/tmux-restore/main/install.sh | bash — it installs tmux, plugins, and turns on auto-save.
- 3Start your AI coding agent, like Claude Code or Codex, in one tmux pane.
- 4Send the agent the text from the block below so it checks everything itself.
- 5Grant the agent extra permissions for the background service if it asks.
- 6Kill and restart tmux, then check your windows, panes, and agent chat came back.
Text for your agent
Copy this and send it to your agent — Claude Code, Codex, any of them:
Install tmux-restore from https://github.com/andrewboldi/tmux-restore — follow the install.sh steps in the README, restart tmux, run Claude Code in one of the panes, and show me that the session comes back after tmux is killed and restarted. Ask me if you need extra permissions for the system service.
Runs in the terminal on a regular laptop or server, Linux or macOS — no GPU needed, just tmux itself and a system service (systemd or launchd).
