Talk to your AI agent out loud through an old Amazon Echo speaker
Hermes Voice turns an old Amazon Echo speaker into a voice interface for your AI agent: you speak out loud, and the agent answers back through Home Assistant.
It's an add-on for Home Assistant (a smart-home platform) that connects voice input and output to your Hermes AI agent.
When it helps
Useful if you already run a Hermes agent and have a spare old Echo Dot or Echo Show. Skip it if you have neither, or expect voice control of smart-home devices.
Pros
- Talk to your agent out loud, no typing needed
- Custom wake word 'Hey Hermes' instead of 'Alexa'
- Echo Show screen shows what the agent heard and is doing
- Open-source code and firmware (MIT license)
Cons
- Voice can't control your smart-home devices
- One-click install is currently broken — manual setup only
- Reflashing the Echo can brick the speaker
How to set it up — step by step
- 1Make sure Home Assistant and your own Hermes Agent profile with AI access are already running.
- 2Take an old Amazon Echo Dot or Echo Show and reflash it with echo-dot-assist — this can brick the speaker.
- 3Open your AI agent (Claude Code, Codex) in your project folder and point it to https://github.com/majorminorlabs/hermes-voice.
- 4Send the agent the text from the block below.
- 5Grant any keys or permissions the agent asks for.
- 6Check the result: say 'Hey Hermes' and confirm the speaker responds through Home Assistant.
Text for your agent
Copy this and send it to your agent — Claude Code, Codex, any of them:
Deploy the voice integration for a Hermes Agent profile from here: https://github.com/majorminorlabs/hermes-voice — follow the README, connect it to Home Assistant and to an old Amazon Echo (Dot or Show) running echo-dot-assist, and show me what you get. Ask me if you need any keys or extra permissions.
This is not about laptop power: you need a separately running Home Assistant, your own working Hermes Agent profile with its own model API key, and an old Amazon Echo Dot or Echo Show reflashed with the open-source echo-dot-assist firmware. Without that Echo hardware and an already-configured Hermes Agent, there is nothing to connect.
