Amazon, Cursor, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Vercel released Agent Plugins, an open standard for AI agent extensions — version 1.0.0, dated August 7. One plugin.json file, two components: Agent Skills (workflows and instructions) and MCP servers. Anthropic, which created the MCP protocol itself, did not join the coalition.
Until now, every platform required extensions to be written in its own proprietary format — agent tools were locked inside separate ecosystems. The unified standard does for AI extensions what USB did for devices: one package works everywhere.
