Amazon, Cursor, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Vercel published Agent Plugins, an open standard for building extensions to AI agents, with a plugin.json format and support for Agent Skills and MCP servers.
Amazon, Cursor, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Vercel announced Agent Plugins, an open specification for building plugins for AI agents. It’s version 1.0.0, released on August 7th. It defines one format (plugin.json) which is broken down into two sections: Agent Skills (workflows & instructions) and MCP servers. Conspicuously missing from this list is Anthropic, who created the MCP protocol.
Until now, every platform has used their own custom format for creating plugins. Essentially, each ecosystem was a silo. This universal format for AI plugins is analogous to USB ports for hardware plugins.
