Claude Code Product Lead Catherine Wu Moves to OpenAI

Catherine Wu spent two years as the product lead for Claude Code, Anthropic's AI coding assistant that runs in the terminal. On November 5 she announced she is moving to OpenAI to lead product management for a new Core Products group. Under her, Claude Code grew from a small internal tool. Back then, every action needed manual approval. Today it is trusted with large code migrations and with building entire products, almost without human oversight. Growth marketing manager Austin Lau is also moving from Anthropic to OpenAI.

Leadership moves between the two leading AI labs happen often, and in both directions. Whether a coding agent stays at the frontier depends on what the engineering team ships next, not on who holds the title. For Claude Code, the trend Wu describes is agents taking on more and more of the work while people keep the final say. This shift was already underway before this move. It does not depend on who runs the product.
