Anthropic Signs $11.6 Billion Cloud Deal With Akamai

Anthropic has signed a seven-year contract with Akamai Technologies worth $11.6 billion. Under the deal, Anthropic gets the right to buy up to five percent of Akamai's stock. Two percent is available right away, and another three percent unlocks if the contract grows by $9 billion. In under a year, Anthropic has already committed almost $517 billion in cloud capacity. Back in December, CEO Dario Amodei warned that a mistake in revenue forecasts could push the company into bankruptcy.

In my own work, I pay for Opus 5 and Fable 5.1 every day. Both are Anthropic models, so sums like this hit my own bill too. The company's bet rests on revenue that has not arrived yet, not on money already earned. Amodei himself has said openly that a forecasting error could mean bankruptcy. That does not scare me. But it is a reminder that today's subscription prices should not be treated as permanent.
