OpenAI Raises $11 Billion, Far Below Its $30 Billion Target
OpenAI closed an $11 billion tranche at a $1.25 trillion valuation, well short of the $30 billion it was aiming for back in September.
OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, has closed the first tranche of funding in a new investment round. According to Bloomberg, the company has raised $11 billion so far at a $1.25 trillion valuation. The full round is expected to close within a few weeks. The total could grow to $20 billion. Back in September, reports said OpenAI was seeking $30 billion at a $1.4 trillion valuation.
These numbers are noticeably lower than what was reported earlier. There is also news on a competing AI research group, Anthropic, the maker of the Claude models. Potential investors in Anthropic's upcoming IPO now expect a valuation of $1.1 trillion. A month ago, that figure was $2 trillion. This points to a broader cooling in AI investment.
