EU Commits $11.4B to Seven AI Gigafactories

The European Union will pour $11.4 billion in public money into seven 'gigafactories' — massive data centers for AI training. Each will house at least 100,000 of the most powerful AI chips, delivering four times the compute of any existing European data center. Eighteen EU member states have joined the program, and with private investment the total could reach $34 billion.

For years, the EU has been watching the AI race from the sidelines while compute capacity piled up in the U.S. and Asia. The seven gigafactories are an attempt to break that dependency in one move: without your own servers, you have no sovereign models, no sovereign technology, no seat at the winners' table.
