OpenAI's First Device: A $300–$400 Puck Speaker Designed by Jony Ive
OpenAI is preparing its first device — a round, screenless puck speaker priced at $300–$400, designed by Jony Ive's studio, with a 2027 launch. OpenAI invested $6.5B in the studio, betting on its own AI hardware.
OpenAI is working on its first hardware product, a circular wireless speaker without a display, but featuring a camera and sensors. It will cost between $300-$400 (that’s significantly higher than most high-end smart speakers), and will be released in 2027. This device was designed by former Apple designer Jony Ive’s firm, which OpenAI recently invested $6.5 billion into.
OpenAI is changing tack. Once a chatbot company (ChatGPT), it’s now moving into hardware, taking on Amazon Echo and Google Nest. However, to justify charging $300–$400 for a voice assistant without a screen, it needs to convince consumers that its product is three times better than regular smart speakers.
