Perplexity’s AI Agent is back on Amazon!
Perplexity’s AI agent has been given the green light by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to continue its work on Amazon. It’s the first time a US federal court has ruled on the legality of autonomous agents on online services.
The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a previous injunction, allowing Perplexity’s AI agent back onto Amazon. The agent operates on the Comet browser, automatically signing into a user’s Amazon account and buying products. In November, Amazon filed suit against Perplexity under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA).
“It is the users who access Amazon’s platform through agents, not Perplexity itself,” said the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. While this specific lawsuit continues (Amazon is deciding whether to appeal), the injunction has been vacated.
This ruling establishes a key legal precedent for autonomous agents in US federal appellate courts, specifically those that interact with third party sites on behalf of a user. It may serve as a blueprint for other types of autonomous agents, such as those that book, buy, and pay for services.
