Fields Medalist Jacob Tsimerman Joins OpenAI After Writing AI Extinction Paper
Mathematician Jacob Tsimerman won the 2026 Fields Medal and joined OpenAI — despite having previously published a paper on AI as an existential threat to humanity.
Jacob Tsimerman, a mathematician who won the 2026 Fields Medal (the Nobel Prize of math), immediately went to work for OpenAI after receiving his prize. Earlier, he wrote a paper about “omnicide” — cases where artificial intelligence might lead to human extinction. He believes that AI will soon outperform humans in mathematical research.
