Palo Alto Networks Buys AI Agent Security Startup for $500M
Palo Alto Networks is in talks to buy startup Clutch Security for $500 million — nearly 50 times its $10 million annual revenue.
Palo Alto Networks, a major cybersecurity vendor, is reportedly in talks to acquire three-year-old startup Clutch Security for $500 million in cash plus additional earnouts. Clutch Security's technology restricts what AI agents can access inside corporate networks. The company generates about $10 million in annual revenue, putting the deal at nearly 50 times revenue. Back in January 2025, a funding round valued Clutch Security at $85 million. This would be Palo Alto Networks' 7th acquisition this year. The market for this technology keeps getting more competitive: rivals include Astrix (bought by Cisco for roughly $400 million) and Oasis Security (bought by Cyera for $1 billion).
It makes sense that big companies are fighting over this niche. Most failures happen at the deployment stage, not during testing. But a valuation of nearly 50 times revenue tells me there is more hype than rational decision-making around AI security right now. You could get a similar effect just by restricting what AI agents can access, instead of paying half a billion dollars for a startup.
